IPL 2020: RR bank on foreign flavour for success

From a moneyball team to an extravagant spender, the Rajasthan Royals have come a long way in the Indian Premier League (IPL). But the irony is, the list of their big buys underscores a clear imbalance between the might of the overseas and the Indian players.
The foreign contingent, particularly the quartet of Steve Smith, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, gives Royals a reputation of a team capable of stunning the giants of the high-octane IPL.
While Buttler has the responsibility of giving a kick-start to the innings, Archer is the leader of the bowling attack. In the absence of any star Indian name in the squad, the overseas players, which also include David Miller, Tom Curran, Andrew Tye and Oshane Thomas, will have to do the heavy lifting.

In a scenario where any of the ‘fearsome four’ fail to perform or is unavailable, the Royals will be in danger of losing their sting. The cushion provided by Indian batsman Sanju Samson will be crucial. The Kerala player comes with an image of a menacing batter, but he needs to shun the tag of being inconsistent.
The new additions in the form of Under-19 star Yashasvi Jaiswal and seasoned Robin Uthappa is the biggest plus for the Jaipur-based franchise and they promise to take the load off their foreign counterparts.

To the Royals’ relief, Shreyas Gopal’s leg-spin is a formidable weapon, capable of turning a match on its head. Given the capricious nature of the T20 matches along with dominant presence of one-man shows, the Smith-led outfit cannot be taken lightly.
